Ruhr Metropolis - Essen

Already from far you see in Essen the 55-meter-high elevator shaft of Zollverein XII. Until 1986 coal was still mined, but since the 90s, this is a center for creativity and culture. This former industrial site is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List and shows the change to a cultural region.

Essen offers a number of other cultural highlights such as the Ruhr Museum with information about the history of the Ruhr Metropolis, the Folkwang Museum with a collection of art from different periods, the Essen Dom from the 14th century and the Old Synagogue, now a monument and center for German-Jewish history.
